Genius Hour Reflection
Summarize the purpose of your Genius Hour project in 140 characters.
The purpose of our project was to raise money for the Almost Home Animal Shelter by making tie dye shirts. We sold over 50 shirts and raised $300.
Explain the process of your Genius Hour project. Be reflective. Be contemplative. Explain and describe your journey. (No Less Than Three FULL Paragraphs.)
Our first step was to figure out our idea. We wanted to raise money for the shelter, but we didn’t know how. We came up with the idea to make tie dye shirts. We then told our friends and family about our idea, and took orders from the people wanting to buy a shirt. It was a success! We took over 50 orders and distributed the shirts right away.
The next step we took was buying the supplies. We each provided a small fund of our own to buy the shirts and dye. When money started coming in from the shirts, we took a small percentage to go towards the shirt supplies. I bought the supplies and spent a few days making the shirts. One of our main features of these shirts was the customer could pick their colors and we would draw a logo on the shirt. Avery and I spent the night making over twenty shirts. Each shirt was specialized by the customer who bought it. After many, many hours of work, we finally finished. We made over 50 shirts.
The next step was collecting the money and bringing it to the shelter. It took a while for our customers to bring us money in exchange for their shirt. We've had to remind some many times, but finally collected our funds. We then made our way to the shelter one weekend. We bonded with the animals to fully realize who we'll be helping. After an hour of play, we donated $300 to the shelter. The workers we shocked, and we couldn't be happier to help.
The intention For Genius Hour is NOT only to learn, but ALSO to share your knowledge with others who can and will benefit from your learning. How did you share your learning? What do you hope the result might be? (No Less Than Two Full Paragraphs.)
We shared our learning by creating shirts. These shirts have a message behind them; representing the animal shelter and the animals. As I walk around the hallways of the school, I see people wearing our shirts, spreading our message to others. Many people are aware of our shirts and come to us asking how we've impacted the shelter. Our shirts are spreading awareness throughout our community.
I hope that by sharing our message more people will get involved in helping our community. Not only helping the animal shelter, but also in other areas of our community. Many places need help, and are waiting for their cause to be recognized, such as the Caring House. Also, with our shirts spreading the message, I hope people will become aware of how much our shelter does for the community.
If you could do anything different with your Genius Hour project what would you do differently and why? (No less than two full paragraphs.)
If I could do anything differently, it would be giving ourselves more time to complete the project, so it wouldn't feel as rushed to get all the money in. Also, I wish we could have been more organized. The money aspect was very organized, but our division of time wasn't the best. Most of the time Avery and I were the only ones to complete the work.
Organization is a key aspect in running a “company.” Dividing our time evenly, or sacrificing other events to work on the shirts/orders, would've made the process a lot easier to complete. However, by the end we figured out times all of us could meet and finish this project with a bang. Besides finding times to meet, we also had difficulty dividing work between the five of us. One or two of us would do more work than the others, which is unfair. We eventually found a way to divide it, and it all worked out in the end.
Reflect on what you did well during this Genius Hour process? Note your successes and accomplishments. (No less than two full paragraphs.)
One of our accomplishments I believe is how fast we got our message out. We didn't have to make flyers or put an announcement on the overhead speaker. Our message was spread by our friends and family who were excited to support our cause. Many people found out quickly and couldn't wait to order shirts. Going along with fast orders, I believe we got our shirts to the customers quickly. If the customer had paid, we immediately made their shirt and gave it to them. Our service was quick.
Another accomplishment was how much money we were able to donate. After many hours of making shirts and taking orders, we sold over 50 tie dye shirts and collected $300. When we were finally able to go to the shelter and donate the money, all of the hard work was worth it. Meeting the animals showed us who we were helping and it made it even more special. The look on the worker's faces was priceless as we gave them the money. It is a memory I will never forget.
