Within the past few weeks, we have sold all of our shirts and finished collecting the money. Our next step is to go to the shelter to donate the money. This is a difficult task because all of our schedules conflict and we are still finding a day that works for all of us. We have planned a day for us to go to the shelter. I am working on my Genius Hour Reflection each Friday and I am coming along with it. I will be finishing it up soon on my own time.

We will bring closure to our Genius Hour Project by donating the money to the shelter. We have been waiting for our last few payments, but we are now ready to donate the money. Our proof of our work are the shirts and money we’ve collected by raising awareness of shelter pets. We are hoping when we donate the money we will have a chance to visit the animals we’ve helped out. Blog Post #6
Girls Who Code Closing Computer Science Gap In this article, Jillian Ward explained the diminishing rate of women in computer science jobs. The computer science field is providing more and more jobs every year, but the amount of women working is falling. The numbers of women in computer science are as low as the 1980’s. In Coos Bay, girls created a club “Girls Who Code” to stop the gender roles. Girls in the “Girls Who Code” are using science to develop computer programs. This club is lead by Samantha Buckley and teaches girls who are interested in coding the different aspects of the program. This club teaches girls that this job can also be for women, not just men. The girls in this club learn hands on lead by a teacher. They practice the basics of coding that could help them later on in life in the field of computer science. By creating this club, it teaches young women to be interested in a “man’s work” and defy the gender inequality. Blog Post #5
In Cloud’s article, he summarizes the controversy of being a natural born genius, or a learned genius. He uses information from Simonton, a psychology professor, as his main argument. Simonton expresses that ¨intelligence, enthusiasm, and endurance¨ are the main traits geniuses possess. They also tend to be open-minded, introverted, and ambitious. This can apply to my academic learning because doing well in school isn’t always naturally born. School concepts can be learned by having the motivation to study. Studying is a learned concept, instead of naturally born. It’s important to have the knowledge and motivation to study, instead of relying on naturally knowing information. This relates to my Genius Hour project because throughout the whole experience, I learned a lot. Genius Hour let me create my own project that I am passionate about. Blog Post #4
From Mr. Cowen’s presentation, I learned that speaking in front of the class shouldn’t be a nerve racking experience. Mr. Cowen kept his presentation casual by making jokes, and talking about relatable experiences. Also, he brought in his 3D printer and his models to show the class. His demonstration of making the ghost model made it more interesting by seeing what he does. Mr. Cowen’s order of information made it easy to understand the processes of 3D printing. When my group and I do our presentation, I’d like to bring in one of our shirts to demonstrate to the class. Blog Post #3
The author’s interpretation of a Genius is they think productively, not reproductively. It’s more than high test scores and IQ’s. Geniuses come up with responses from thinking uniquely or unconventionally. They generate as many approaches as they can. Strategies that they share are looking at problems in many different ways to come up with an approach no one has done before. They also make their thoughts visible. Many renowned geniuses have been known to make drawings, graphs, and diagrams. Genius Hour allows students to come up with their own approach to problems instead the way they’ve been conditioned in school. It allows personal freedom in their decisions. In this article about the concept of Genius Hour it explains the learning freedom students now can have. Teachers are now exploring new, creative ways to help students learn and achieve something they're interested in. Genius Hour is allowing students to learn about failure, and to accept that it is okay. Failure is acceptable because there is a learning experience from it. Genius Hour has allowed me to branch out of the typical school learning guidelines by researching something I am interested in and I can be creative with. I now have confidence in my own ideas because I can share them through Genius Hour.

The next few months I would like to accomplish a few goals. I would like to sell 20 shirts and donate the proceeds to the Almost Home Animal Shelter. I would also like to sell shirts to my family and friends that don’t live in our town. My final goal is to see the number of animals in the shelter go down from where it is now. The current number of cats is twenty-eight, and five dogs. By November I would like to sell and design the t-shirts to my family and friends. By December/January I would like to have sold 50 shirts to people throughout the community. By January I would love to see a smaller number of animals in the shelter. I hope to achieve these goals by January. |
