Girls Who Code Closing Computer Science Gap In this article, Jillian Ward explained the diminishing rate of women in computer science jobs. The computer science field is providing more and more jobs every year, but the amount of women working is falling. The numbers of women in computer science are as low as the 1980’s. In Coos Bay, girls created a club “Girls Who Code” to stop the gender roles. Girls in the “Girls Who Code” are using science to develop computer programs. This club is lead by Samantha Buckley and teaches girls who are interested in coding the different aspects of the program. This club teaches girls that this job can also be for women, not just men. The girls in this club learn hands on lead by a teacher. They practice the basics of coding that could help them later on in life in the field of computer science. By creating this club, it teaches young women to be interested in a “man’s work” and defy the gender inequality.
